I'm a Londoner recently moved to Malta. I've moved here with my husband and two kids and my dog Taco. Taco (a white cock-a-poo) and I are exploring the island on foot. In another life I worked in marketing and recruitment for a university.
Mellieha/Anchor bay loop

Mellieha/Anchor bay loop

This is a good 10km round route that takes you to both sides of the island and includes Popeye Village, Ghadira Bay, St Agatha’s Tower (or the red tower), Foresta 2000 Nature Reserve, Mellieha Village and the secret ‘Grotto of our Lady’. It also includes a few steep climbs. As it’s a loop you can start the walk from anywhere. I decided to start at the Starbucks at the end of Ghadira beach. Easy parking and coffee – say no…

Gozo coastal walk

Gozo coastal walk

Day 1: Mġarr Harbour to Xlendi Bay Gozo – the little sister island to Malta has a circumference of just 55km (compared to Malta’s huge 155km coast). It took me 14 walks to get around Malta so hiking around Gozo should be a breeze! The walk around Gozo can be broken down into four walks starting from Mgarr Harbour. Much as I would have loved to do all four walks in 4 days I only had time for the first…

Kuncizzjoni Chapel to Ghajn Tuffieha Bay

Kuncizzjoni Chapel to Ghajn Tuffieha Bay

The start For this walk we met at the end point, Ghajn Tuffieha Bay car park. We then got a taxi to the start at Kuncizzjoni Chapel near Bahrija. From the Kuncizzjoni Chapel, we followed a path running alongside the Victoria Lines. The Victoria Lines run across the top of Malta from the West to the East coast. There were stunning views the whole way on this walk and a fairly clear path to follow most of the time. You…

Walk 8 – Dingli Cliffs to Bahrija

Walk 8 – Dingli Cliffs to Bahrija

A very hairy walk  This walk I did in the wrong order. I didn’t do it straight after walk 7 but I left it out and came back to it. Partly because it sounded very challenging and partly because it was quite remote so I wasn’t sure about how I’d arrange transport. So I’m now going back and completing this missing section of the coastal walk with two walking companions – Sarah and Antonia.   This coast is particularly wild and…

Walk 13 – St Paul’s Bay to Bahar ic-Caghaq

Walk 13 – St Paul’s Bay to Bahar ic-Caghaq

For the first time, I was doing an afternoon walk rather than a morning one. This was down to logistics as it was an easier time for me to get dropped off by. I had planned on walking from St Paul’s all the way to the end of my coastal walk (Spinola Bay). However, I decided whilst driving there that it would be too far (and too hot). Although St Paul’s is quite a big and busy village in Malta…

Walk 12 – Ghadira bay to St Paul’s Bay

Walk 12 – Ghadira bay to St Paul’s Bay

This walk took place a week after the last walk so I’m really racing on now to complete the full trip around the island. Word has got out and this time I had a record four friends joining me on the walk – Sarah, Michaela, Lynn and newbie Claire. It turned out that the day after we did this walk the schools closed due to Covid-19 so we were very happy we managed to fit this in whilst we could.  I…

Walk 11 – Ramla Bay to Ghadira Beach

Walk 11 – Ramla Bay to Ghadira Beach

Not one, not two but three friends joined me on this walk! Sarah is back for her third walk with me and now we are joined by newbies Lynn and Michaela. The numbers are increasing so the word has clearly spread around Malta. This walk in the book officially starts from Cirkewwa and goes to the end of Ghadira beach covering the whole of the Marfa peninsula – the Northern peak of Malta. However, I decided we should start at…

Walk 10 – Golden Bay to Paradise Bay

Walk 10 – Golden Bay to Paradise Bay

For this walk, Sarah joined me again and only a week after the previous walk – that is a record. It was going to be a bit of a race against time as Sarah had to get back for the school pick up at 12.45 and we had a 12k walk ahead of us. But I’m always up for a challenge. We met early at Paradise bay – the endpoint – which is right at the top of the…

Walk 9 – Bahrija to Golden Bay

Walk 9 – Bahrija to Golden Bay

Great excitement about this walk. Firstly because it’s supposed to be one of the best coastal walks in Malta. It passes three beautiful sandy beaches – Gneyna (popular with local Maltese), Ghajn Taffieha (the hipster beach) and Golden Bay (the busiest and biggest of the three that is very popular with tourists). I know and love all three beaches and I’ve been to them all many times. I was also excited about this walk though because I had a walking companion…

Walk 7 Blue Grotto – Dingli cliffs

Walk 7 Blue Grotto – Dingli cliffs

Yep, it’s been AGES. I need to crack on with this walk as I’m only halfway round the island. This walk from the Blue Grotto to the Dingli cliffs was a long one and a hot one. It was the end of May when I did the walk and the weather had actually been unseasonably cool. However, the day I choose to walk was, of course, hot.  For this walk, I did some forward planning with the taxis. I decided…
